Lay Ministry / Reader Training

25th April 2022

Individuals sponsored by any Church of England Diocese can come to Emmanuel to be prepared for Licensed Lay Ministry or Reader Ministry. We offer formational training for candidates part-time over two years. The Church of England is committed to developing, equipping, ad releasing lay leaders to serve the mission of God and extend the kingdom of God across our nation, and, with that in mind, the pathways we offer for Licensed Lay Ministry/Reader Ministry candidates involve three distinct but interwoven strands:

  1. Our Ministry Formation Programme for LLM/Reader Ministry candidates is delivered across one residential weekend and four Saturday study days each academic year. We focus on prayer and spirituality at each of the residential weekends (as we believe that a strong and sustainable prayer life is key to all effective ministry) and subsequently on a range of leadership and ministry skills across the study days, including pastoral care and worship leading.
  2. For most LLM/Reader Ministry candidates, the Contextual Ministry Placement usually means staying in your home/sending Church and learning with and from your vicar who will act as your contextual supervisor. The College is responsible for all placements and will work with your dioceses to make sure you have a good, supportive context and an appropriate local supervisor. You and your supervisor will be sent a briefing pack by the College and a working agreement to complete. You will also have a Formation Tutor at College who will journey with you throughout your training. Your Tutor will keep contact with your placement supervisor regarding your progress each year.
  3. Our Academic Theology Programme is a Certificate in Theology, Ministry, and Mission validated by the University of Durham. Most of our teaching towards this programme is delivered during termtime, 6.30-9.15pm. Each evening we teach simultaneously in Blackburn and Penrith (Tuesdays), and Liverpool and Manchester (Thursdays). Emmanuel operates 3 ten-week terms each year. Overall, you will study six modules: Theology and Reflective Practice; Old Testament; New Testament; Creeds and Councils; Christian Discipleship and Ethics; and Preaching.
