College appoints new Honorary Professor

7th September 2023

Emmanuel Theological College is delighted to announce that The Very Revd Dr Kelly Brown Douglas has been appointed Honorary Professor of Global Theology.

Dean Michael Leyden, Honorary Professor Kelly Brown Douglas, and Vice Dean Shemil Mathew

Dr Brown Douglas currently serves as Interim President of the Episcopal Divinity School, New York, and has a long career as a theologian, priest, activist, and community leader. Welcoming her appointment, the Dean of Emmanuel, The Revd Canon Dr Michael Leyden, said, “I am pleased that Kelly Brown Douglas has accepted my invitation to become honorary Professor of Global Theology. Her ministry as a priest and theologian pushes us to take seriously the call to all Christians to live as radical disciples of Jesus Christ, to work as one body around the globe towards his coming kingdom. Professor Brown Douglas’ work has long been inspirational, provocative, challenging, and inviting. I am thrilled at the prospect of all that our ongoing relationship will mean for the formation of leaders for the Church. Theology is a task for the whole people of God in response to the gospel of Christ, and doing theology and formation in partnership with others across the Anglican Communion is an important facet of our vision at Emmanuel.”

Professor Brown Douglas delivered the keynote address at Emmanuel’s ‘Global Theology and the Future Church’ conference at Liverpool Cathedral in September 2022 and will be spending the whole of the autumn term at Emmanuel, contributing to teaching and engaging with partners across the Church of England. She will be preaching at the College’s Commencement Eucharist on Saturday 9th September at Blackburn Cathedral. In response to her appointment, Professor Brown Douglas said, “I am honored to accept this gracious invitation to join the Emmanuel Theological College community as Honorary Professor of Global Theology, and I thank Dean Michael and the board for this opportunity. I am looking forward to returning to Emmanuel and to all that lies ahead.”
